Everybody Clean Up!

Spring Landscaping Maintenance

Fall and Winter, despite being dormant seasons, create a lot of mess! Spring landscaping maintenance is an essential part of having a healthy yard. Leaves, loose sticks, and dead plants all contribute to an untidy space. Even worse than a simple mess, unraked leaves can choke and kill your grass, forcing you to reseed or lay sod.

Of course, you can simply bag all of this debris up in trash bags and lug it to the curb, but if you are looking for something a little easier and less time-consuming, working on tasks now for a healthy spring is the way to go. Don’t want to do the cleanup yourself? Schedule a professional cleanup service to do it for you!

Raised Beds, Not Just a Trend

If you are thinking of putting in some new raised beds this year, don’t get rid of those leaves and sticks from your Spring yard cleanup just yet. Instead, line the bottom of your new bed with cardboard, pile on those leaves and sticks till your bed is about three-quarters of the way full, and top with soil. This makes for some wonderful green compost that will help your plants thrive this growing season (and cut down on how much money you have to spend on dirt).

If you have your garden beds ready but have no idea what to plant, ABB Landscaping offers planting installation services to put each plant in the right place, saving you lots of stress and time.

Mulching for Dummies

Speaking of garden beds, let’s talk about mulch. Mulch may seem like a step you can just skip at the end of planting, but it is a vital part of Spring landscaping maintenance if you don’t want to be out in the hot Roanoke summer pulling weeds all season long.

Mulching is a wonderful way to prepare your yard for Summer because it also locks in moisture, ensuring your garden needs less frequent watering. Hate mulching? No problem! ABB Landscaping will handle all of your mulching needs - just put your feet up and watch them work.

Soil pH, Not Just For Scientists

Testing your soil pH may seem far-fetched or difficult, but it is actually quite simple

  • Get some soil test strips from the store

  • Dig a small soil sample (about half a cup)

  • Mix the sample with distilled water and stir

  • Let the sample sit for around 30 mins

  • Strain the dirt through a coffee filter

  • Dip the test strip into the filtered water

If your results are undesirable, you can correct your soil yourself, or call a professional to do it for you! Remember that early pH correction and soil fertilization will make the most impact on your plant health and your fall harvest.

Trees, Branches, and Shrubs: Oh My!

Spring is the perfect time to prune shrubs and trees. Spring landscaping maintenance is an essential step in having a healthy yard. New growth makes dead or broken limbs even more obvious, and early pruning ensures that trees can focus all their energy on new, healthy growth.

Check out ABB’s pruning services if you aren’t quite sure where to start. If you are looking at your yard and thinking it needs a few more trees, Spring is also a great time to consider planting a new tree or ten!

Damage Check

The last step to ensuring a healthy yard for Spring is to check your hardscaping for damage. Fall and Winter can be very hard on the more permanent elements of your yard. Good Spring landscaping maintenance always includes a thorough check of the walkways, patio, and retaining walls. If you find any damage, be sure to call and schedule a professional fix to save money on a more costly repair further down the line!
